Day 42

It's day 42 by my calculations and things have, so far, gone more smoothly than ever expected. Scott and Hans are on it!

We've had very little downtime and the project has seemed to flow seamlessly from demo to framing to HVAC, electrical, plumbing to Roofing and now the new staircase.

The whole crew is great with kids, they clean up every afternoon, and strangely it's not bad having them around.

It don't think the guys were here today. Waiting for the roof I guess. I understand there is going to be a crane involved when the roof gets here so there should be some excitement then.

Exterior framing is almost complete. The roof trusses have been ordered and will arrive in 2 weeks. At that point internal framing will start. The 2 weeks will actually give us some time to ponder some layout tweaks.

Framing continues. One of the exterior walls is up so we are getting some idea of just how big this thing is going to be. It's about the size of our first house on 33rd Avenue, and about the same PRICE.

It looks like the demo is complete. All of the existing framing is gone.

The old furnace chimney is still in place and is sitting right where Jacks room will eventually be.

The roofers did make it and the shigles are all off. There's not much to show other than a dirty great truck in the drive.

The porch conversion

Along with "popping the top" we are using the summer weather to do a few other projects around the place. Taking out the old "sunroom" windows and reclaiming the full porch is one such project.

We spend a lot time outside so a nice sitting area on the front porch will be very nice. The vision is a swing, Adirondack style chairs, G&t's, neighbor's dropping by and watching the kids on their bikes.

Deconstruction began 2 weekends ago. I first knocked the pins out of the hinges and removed the casement style windows. After using a very small pry bar that I already own with very little success I decided to decided to invest in a large pry bar designed to give a lot of leverage and started to remove the framing. It was slow going at first but I had a revelation - take out the pieces in the order they were put in - after that things just sped along.

I have trouble parting with old wood. This stuff is perfectly clear old growth Doug Fir. (Oregon - to anyone reading in Australia) Apparently not everyone shares my passion as there was not a single taker at the garage sale.

When making changes to the house I have always had a bit of a thing about giving a nod to what was there before. I'm going to try and get a drink/snack/lunch tray made with the old wood. I'll bring coffee and toast on it out to the porch on a a summer morning. I like it. It's almost symbiotic.

False start!

Hans called Lori today to tell her that "the roofers are tied up with another job".

Fingers crossed for 9am tomorrow.

At least it gives me an opportunity to take some "before" pictures.
